Well look at Martin Lewis of MoneySavingExpert.com, he has got there because he appears on TV, the radio, magazines and newspapers... that particular forum has a massive membership well in excess of 100K

For mere mortals without the aide of TV, radio, newspapers etc it is almost mission impossible.

Porn and gambling sites are a given... I think AdSense and YPN can earn you a good amount of money if they are integrated well. I just started making mini sites, kind of as a test to see if I can make some easy money. You can see what I'm talking about by clicking here .

The best way is to come up with a unique and very popular idea. A great example is Good-Tutorials.com . The owner, Zach Holman, was (as far as I know) the first person to create a tutorial indexing site. As a result, his site became insanely popular and he makes thousands in revenue each month. He makes over $4,000 each month from text ad sales alone...

I think some of the boards like sitepoint and digital point have benefitted from being in early. Digital point has also done well through the associated tools that he offers. These examples show it can be done, but it's a very, very small % that make it THAT big. I think it requires a little luck also...
